Choosing to get a vasectomy is a serious business. This is a form of birth control that will be permanent and any time you are having a surgical procedure, no matter how minor, it is always important for you to know the risks and the side effects.

Potential Risks Associated With A Vasectomy

Though a vasectomy is considered a procedure that is low risk, complications can arise any time you have surgery. For most men, having major complications associated with the procedure is a rare occurrence and most are caused by infection. Some symptoms you should be aware of are a fever that is over 100 degrees Fahrenheit, having extreme pain or if there is unusual swelling or if there is pus or blood seeping from your incision. If any of these symptoms occur, you should call your doctor immediately.

Problems You May Encounter After A Vasectomy

Most men who have had a vasectomy, breeze in and out of the appointment with little or no after effects. For others, there may have been some bleeding into the skin while the procedure was being performed and it may cause bruising. This will clear up by itself. Sometimes there is a hematoma, which is a swelling that has blood. This only happens about twice in one hundred cases. If you rest and apply ice packs it usually takes care of itself. It is a rarity that you will need to be drained surgically.

Having swelling of the testicles with fluid called hydrocels or tenderness only occurs about once in one hundred cases. This type of side effect usually clears up in a week or so. Having a surgical draining for this is rare as well. There have been instances where sperm leaks from the tubes and can cause you to get a small lump which is called granulomas. This usually appears beneath the skin near where the procedure was performed. This also usually clears itself though sometimes surgical treatment may be needed.

You may experience a mild infection after a vasectomy. This happens in about 7 out of 100 cases. An abscess may form though this is a rare occurrence. Your doctor will treat this side effect with antibiotics. Usually men experience some pain and discomfort in their testicles after having a vasectomy. In only 2 out of 100 cases the pain is severe and chronic. You can usually relieve the pain by taking over the counter pain relievers. If pain is very severe, you can get an injection that will deaden your pain on a temporary basis. This is called a spermatic cord block. In the worst case scenario you will need to have a reversal of your vasectomy to relieve the pain.

There usually isn’t any long lasting effects or risks that are associated with a vasectomy. If you are concerned about anything at all regarding the procedure, be sure you talk at length with your health care provider to put all your fears and concerns to rest. As long as you have faith in your doctor, you should have no problems at all when you have a vasectomy performed.
