Premature Ejaculation: Is It All In The Mind?

The first time is always the most exciting. And for teenagers who can’t tame their hormonal urges, having their first sexual encounter can be a most stressful experience. In the backseat of a car, in a bathroom stall, or in a closet while the party is going on, most first timers engaging in the bliss of sex often find themselves in a less than relaxed situation. And at the back of their minds, the message of sex can be lasting: “Hurry up and be done with it.” Or “Better not get caught doing it, so hurry up.” Now you have the seeds planted in the unconscious mind for premature ejaculation to plague most people up to their married lives.

This is one theory behind what ails most men suffering from premature ejaculation. Defined as the inability to control orgasm to arrive at the right time with your partner, premature orgasm can be quite dismaying for the woman. And unless corrected, it can and does scar the sex experience for both partners.

But is it all in the mind? There’s this theory that suggests its roots can be traced to the mind, specifically the subconscious. First time experiences are said to cement onto the subconscious a pattern for sex done under less than ideal situations as mentioned above. A number of cases point to this. And a string of doctor-patient interviews should be able to easily reveal its psychological roots.

One avenue to overcome premature ejaculation under this theory is to have a partner who understands the problem and sympathetic to her man. The couple consents to undergo sessions that create a relaxed unhurried atmosphere when engaging in sex. Frequent sessions under such conditions can reverse the mental stress that drives rapid orgasm for the man. This seems to work in a number of cases. And the ability of the woman to handle the situation often determines its success or failure.

Together with a relaxed atmosphere, there are physical exercises to help the man control premature ejaculation on the conscious level. A lot of internet medical sites on the subject mention the Kegel exercises for this purpose. It involves consciously delaying orgasm by tightening certain pelvic muscles. It does work with frequent practice.

At one extreme, if these sessions and exercises don’t work, some experts recommend hypnosis. The process is meant to correct the pattern of previous stressful sex indelibly carved in the subconscious that treats sex as matter of a race against time. Hypnosis has the potential to free the mind of such subconscious templates for a more relaxed and satisfying performance in bed.

Some consultations with the experts should clarify if indeed the cause is deep-seated enough to merit tapping into the subconscious. Hypnosis done under the wrong assumptions won’t work and can be dangerous under less than able hands. For sure, premature ejaculation can be tamed. It may not all be in the mind. But in situations when it is, it’s comforting to know there are sure ways to overcome it.
