Simple Aging Or Male Menopause

We age; it’s a fact of life. We are born and with every passing moment we age. As our bodies age, changes are inevitable. There is a natural slowing down process. Our reproductive life slows and eventually comes to a halt. The reproductive organs are not the same young vital full of life organs that they used to be.

There is much in the news about female menopause. There are plenty of books, websites, magazine articles and talk shows devoted to discussing the misunderstood women who undergo the change of life called menopause. Now, it seems that men too have declining hormones to blame for experiencing similar symptoms that women do when they go through menopause.

Male menopause happens much more slowly and does not have the obvious physical announcement (cessation of menses) that the female menopause has. Menopause male or female does have one thing in common – it happens as the approach of mid-life rears it’s ugly head. A time of life when age takes a toll on the body and mind. How then do we tell if there is a medical condition causing the symptoms or just simply a natural process of aging?

Doctors usually address the question in this manner – is there physical symptoms? Does the patient experience an inability to function in a normal manner? Has the patient suffered a loss of quality of life? If any or all of the questions are met with a yes, than a further study is conducted to discover if there are any physical signs of illness. A complete medical history is taken so that clues can be gathered. A history of medications that have recently or currently been taken by the patient and a detailed listing of any and all symptoms will be taken.

The findings are compared with what is normally expected to happen to the human body as it ages to see if there are any differences. If the aging process is found to be happening at too early of an age than there is concern. If blood tests reveal abnormality regarding hormone levels than there are further tests to find out if there are any underlying disease to explain the symptoms. The doctor will refer to any studies or research being conducted to see if there are any answers to be found there.

Usually an answer can be found and a determination made as to if the patient is suffering from normal signs of aging or that the patient indeed has a condition such as male menopause.

Medical personnel compare notes at conferences and papers are written comparing physical findings and lists of symptoms. As time passes and more patients are diagnosed with male menopause and more studies are conducted, the more information is readily available to both medical personnel and individuals.
